Grand Knight's Column - April 2008

Members of an organization can be compared to verbs. They are either active or passive. Are you an active or a passive member of an organization? Do you belong so you can share in the glory of being able to say you are a member or are you quietly one of the grunts. For you non military types, grunts are those who quietly do the down and dirty work necessary for a group to accomplish its goals. Is your approach to an organization’s activities “If you need help call me” or “when should I be there”?

In any volunteer organization, 10 percent of the members do 90 percent of the work. Are you a part of the doing 10 per cent, or the belonging 90 percent? How committed are you to insure that an organization that you say you are a member of, accomplishes its goals?
In today’s world, the demands on ones time and other resources are many and varied. It is a constant balancing act to attend to the needs of church, family, work, and community. A person must balance the importance of each need in relationship to the others.

The guiding principle of our Order is Charity, the giving of ones self to others. There are many instances in scripture where performing acts of charity are listed, one of which is, “to whom much is given, much is expected”. Charity is giving back what you have been given.

Although the Knights of Columbus as an organization, support several charitable causes, knights as individuals are involved in many other charitable works such as, St Vincent DePaul, Kairos, Birth Choice, Street People, Pack a Sack, Scouting, and others.

When we give of ourselves to others in charity, our personal reward is the satisfaction we experience in knowing that we have helped others. The opportunities for doing acts of charity are many. One has only to look around to see where their talents can be used, then put these talents to use.

We must always remember that an act of charity is an act of love.

Vivat Jesus
Conrad Reich, Grand Knight
